In the second picture, the stark contrast between the dark tree trunk and the white background makes the picture stand out more. The mirror effect creates an interesting composition because of diferent lines and how the eye follows them. Because of this mirror effect, there is a lot of symmetry (the rule of thirds is disregarded).
